In the 1990s, No. 1 Squadron RAF operated the Harrier GR.Mk 5 from RAF Wittering, continuing the unit's tradition as the world's first operational Harrier squadron. The GR.5 introduced advanced avionics, improved cockpit ergonomics, and greater payload capacity compared to earlier versions. Its Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine allowed vertical/short takeoff and landing, enabling flexible deployment from austere bases or aircraft carriers. Painted in a subdued grey/green camouflage, the squadron's Harriers frequently trained for NATO operations and close air support missions. During this period, No. 1 Squadron played a key role in developing tactics that showcased the Harrier's unique agility and versatility.
